Drunk, High, Intoxicated, and Impaired Driving Crimes: DWI and DUI Charges
A DWI/DUI conviction or allegation can have lasting, expensive, and substantial consequences. Even just being arrested—let alone found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt—will result in civil sanctions and a loss of your driving privileges if you do not fight back. You can read more about this civil process and loss of driving privileges here. Consequences and hardships of a DWI or DUI allegation or conviction may include:
- Loss of Driving Privileges. This can range anywhere from 90 days to 6 years, depending on the severity of the offense. You may be required to stop driving entirely, to drive only to limited places at limited times, or to get a breathalyzer installed in your care (called the ignition interlock, which you can learn about here).
- Fines and Insurance. An initial fine of anywhere from $1,000 to $14,000 could be required, depending on the level of the charge. There is a $680 license reinstatement fee, and ignition interlock has significant costs as well. Your insurance company will likely increase your premium payments substantially too.
- Whiskey Plates. Certain offenses may require you to get special licenses plates that signal to the world, and law enforcement, that you were convicted of a DWI or DUI.
- Vehicle Forfeiture. With more serious offenses, the government can take your vehicle and sell it at a public auction.
- Employment. Anyone with a commercial drivers’ license will likely face employment consequences with a DWI or DUI. Also, anyone interested in driving for Uber or DoorDash will likely run into problems.
- No drinking and random testing. Certain people may be required to undergo random drug and alcohol testing, often called being on the “color wheel”. You will have to call in every morning and find out if you are required to come test. If so, you will need to arrange transportation to the testing center and prove your sobriety.
